Support for shunned members

The Cape Cod Times reports:

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe members held a march and gathering yesterday afternoon in a show of support for shunned tribe members.

More than 20 people showed up for yesterday’s event, with about half making the 1½-mile walk from Mashpee town park to the Old Indian Buria

Back in January

Members of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe yesterday voted overwhelmingly to rescind the shunning of four members, according to tribe members.

This is the sort of thing that makes tribal leadership look exceeding bad (along with rape, lying, steroid usage, and restraining orders). These four members were stripped of their tribal rights because they asked to see the agreements the tribe had with casino investors and eventually filed suit.

So come on Shawn Hendricks. Your members want this questionable shunning to be removed. What better time to do it with the Pow-wow coming up? Do the right thing. How is it that Glenn Marshall is not shunned but Amelia Bingham is?

And tell Scott Ferson(still waiting to do lunch Scott) that CFO has no plans to protest the powwow … just like we had no plans to do it last year.

    COMPLETELY NUTS…

that’s all that can be said (well…I could think of a few other choice words) about how crazy it is that Amelia has not been unshunned yet….

    Right on Jacquie.

One of my best(and worst) memories of last summer was meeting Ms. Bingham at your house(good) and then seeing the treatment she got at the BOS meeting(bad).

That was one of the moments that really brought it home to me that no matter what we said, or how we said it, the town was not interested in hearing us – or anyone else that we brought around – including Wampanoag elders.

It’s a real pity. If the town had approached this decision like every other important decision, I think there would have been far less animosity on both sides.

What’s really a pity is the town doesn’t even realize how wrong it was…

Twenty folks? It looked like a CFO gathering at The State House. That’s all? Twenty?

This woman should be a valued tribal elder and not on the outside looking in.

I’m amazed the 20 people were willing to throw themselves under the tribal bus to do the right thing. Ask the 4 shunned members what recourse you have when you dare to voice an opinion that goes against the tribal council.

The shunned members have a lot of support in the tribe – or so the news reports from last Jan. indicated.

As for the CFO gathering comment – cheap shot Rick

I am an expert on cheap shots and that was a beaut. I have to give old LL his due on that one with his big banner to upstage everyone.

We will never really have much of an insight into tribal politics. I actually asked a Sioux about the shunning practice while I was in SD. He looked stunned! Says it can be done but could not remember when it had been. And these are big tribes.

Good thing they can beat down the old gal. Guess that classifies as a coup for some.
